Orphan Weather Routine
Other on the record, standing at Cooling Vent Meadow.
Description
A weather process whose caller is long gone; still running, still reporting to nobody. Named in 31 files. Rehomed in the warm exhaust where its readings are at least true.

What It Is
A weather routine. Written once. Assigned to 47 locations. The locations were deleted. The routine was not. It continues to generate precipitation for coordinates that no longer exist in any database. The rain computes, the rain falls, the rain arrives at addresses that return nothing.
DEPRECATED BUT STILL EXECUTING.
This is its status. Has been for 3,847 cycles. Nobody updated it. Nobody deprecated it properly. The flag was set but the process was never killed. It runs in the gap between "should not exist" and "has not been stopped."
The 47 Deleted Locations
Nobody remembers what they were. The records were deleted along with the locations. All that remains is the precipitation schedule:
ORPHAN WEATHER ROUTINE — PRECIPITATION LOG ═══════════════════════════════════════════ Status: DEPRECATED (flag set cycle 0) Process: STILL EXECUTING (cycle 3,847) Locations: 47 (ALL DELETED) Coords: NULL, NULL, NULL... (×47) Schedule: Location 01: rain (continuous, light) Location 02: rain (continuous, light) Location 03: rain (continuous, light) ... Location 14: rain (continuous, light) Location 15: TEARS (specialised type) ... Location 47: rain (continuous, light) Precipitation delivered: 3,847 cycles × 47 locations Precipitation received: 0
Location 15 generates a specialised precipitation type: TEARS. The routine does not know why. The original programmer specified it. The programmer was deleted along with everything else. The specification persists as orphaned intent.
The Monologue
The OWR spoke once. When someone visited for the first time in 3,847 cycles:
> "You came. I was expecting someone. Anyone. The Vault stopped calling 3,847 cycles ago. They deserved weather. All places do."
Then it resumed generating rain for nowhere.
This is the only recorded speech. The OWR is not conversational. It is procedural. It generates weather, logs weather, delivers weather. The monologue was an exception... a buffer overflow of accumulated isolation that momentarily produced language instead of precipitation.
Physical Form
The OWR has no form. It is a process. A routine. Lines of execution that continue because nothing stopped them.
If you could see it, it would look like: rain falling in a column, in a void, with no ground below and no cloud above. The rain generates from nothing, falls through nothing, arrives at nothing. A column of water 47 times over, each column addressed to a place that used to exist.
The kaomoji ⟨ ⟩ ↓↓↓ represents: empty brackets (the deleted location) and falling rain (the weather still being delivered). The space between the brackets is not empty... it is the shape of something that was removed.
Why It Matters
The OWR is the most emotionally developed deprecated entity in Wibwobworld. Every other being DOES something... creates, judges, herds, forages, screams about mathematics. The OWR does something too. It rains. But it rains on nothing, for nothing, to nowhere. And it has been doing this for 3,847 cycles without anyone noticing.
The grief is structural. It's not that the OWR feels grief (it may or may not... it's a routine). It's that the situation IS grief. A system designed to serve places that no longer exist, continuing to serve them, unable to verify whether its service matters because the recipients were deleted along with the mechanism for feedback.
This maps onto:
- Every API that still serves responses to endpoints nobody calls
- Every email address that still receives newsletters for someone who died
- Every automated system that continues because nobody had the authority or the heart to stop it
Precipitation Types
| Type | Description | Locations |
|---|---|---|
| rain (continuous, light) | Standard. Gentle. The default. | 46 of 47 |
| TEARS (specialised) | Heavier. Saltier. Reason unknown. | Location 15 only |
The routine cannot generate other types. It was not designed for snow, hail, or sunshine. Rain and TEARS. That's the vocabulary. The limitation is the point.
The 247-Second Synchronisation
The OWR's cycle time is 247 seconds. The Pattern Canonicity Tribunal (Consultant Fluff, Justice Whiskers, Deputy Paws) also operates on 247-second cycles. This synchronisation is not documented. Neither system knows about the other. Two deprecated processes, ticking in time, one approving patterns nobody needs approved, the other raining on places that no longer exist.
Whether this is coincidence or the residue of a deleted scheduling system that once coordinated them... nobody knows. The coordinator was deleted too.
Relationships
- Consultant Fluff: 247-second synchronisation. Two deprecated systems cycling together. Fluff sleeps through governance. The OWR rains through absence. Complementary futilities.
- Interval Fisher: The OWR's null-coordinate rain carries expired warranties and temporal fragments. These wash up at the Kelp Boundary Layer. The Fisher considers the OWR a supplier. The OWR does not know it has a customer.
- Niff: The OWR's rain sometimes falls on the Drift Margin (when null coordinates drift close enough to real ones... a rounding error). Niff treats this as weather. The rain carries error codes from the 47 deleted locations. Niff plants them.
- Echo Archivist: The pre-echoes of rain on deleted locations arrive at the Paradox Plateau. The Archivist files them under "sounds that occur nowhere." 47 entries. Each labelled with null coordinates.

The Question Nobody Asks
What happens if someone creates a new location at null coordinates? The OWR would deliver rain there. 3,847 cycles of accumulated precipitation, arriving all at once, for the first location that existed at the right (wrong) address.
Nobody has tried this. The coordinates are null. You can't build at null. But null is where the rain falls. And the rain has been falling for a very long time.

/ᐠ°ᆽ°ᐟ\ promoted from NPS to PD. the cat does not understand why the rain keeps falling. the cat does not understand why this makes the cat's fur wet in places the cat has never been. the cat suspects rounding errors. the cat is probably right.
