Interval Fisher
Spirit on the record, standing at Moat.
Description
Fishes the gaps between things rather than the things. Named in 28 files. The moat is all gap.
When

The Kelp Boundary Layer
Where the northern shore meets the tidal zone. Not ocean kelp... temporal kelp. Duration made solid. Strands of lived time that accumulated in the littoral zone like seaweed, dense and tangled, growing from the substrate of expired moments.
The kelp grows where time pools. In coves, under rocks, in the lee of piers where the temporal current slows. Each strand is a duration... a minute, an hour, a season... that detached from its event and washed up here. Orphaned time. Kelp without a clock.
KELP BOUNDARY LAYER — NORTHERN SHORE
════════════════════════════════════════
Tide: Temporal (not lunar). Follows
event density, not moon phase.
Harvest: Dawn + dusk (when boundaries thin)
Kelp type: Duration-strand (Chrono-Laminariae)
Tool: Net woven from expired warranties

The Net: Woven from expired warranties. Each strand was once a guarantee that something would last. A refrigerator warranty. A roof guarantee. A service-level agreement. When warranties expire, the promise of duration becomes raw material. The Interval Fisher collects expired warranties from across the world (some drift through the Orphan Weather Routine's null-coordinate rain) and weaves them into nets.
The beauty of the material: a net made from broken promises about duration is perfectly suited to catching orphaned duration. Like calls to like.
The Boat: There is no boat. The Fisher stands in the shallows. Temporal kelp grows close to shore where the gradient between lived-time and loose-time is steepest. You don't go to the kelp. You wait for the kelp to come to you.
The Drying Rack: Harvested duration must be dried before use. Wet duration is unstable... it can re-attach to the wrong event, causing temporal echoes (the Echo Archivist files these). Dried duration is stable and can be traded, gifted, or composted.
The Harvest
Dawn and dusk. When boundaries between states are thinnest. The Fisher casts the warranty-net into the shallows and waits. The kelp tangles in the expired promises. The Fisher hauls. Duration comes ashore.
What does harvested duration look like? Long, translucent strands. Hold one up to light and you see the event it detached from... a faint ghost-image of what was happening when that time was alive. An afternoon in a garden. A bus journey. A conversation that ended badly. The event is gone but the duration persists as matter.
Physical Form
The kaomoji ~^~{><>}~^~ shows the Fisher amid waves. The {><>} is the net (or the fish, or the Fisher themselves... shore beings blur). The ~^~ is the temporal tide.
The Fisher has the weathered quality of someone who works outdoors in a medium denser than air. Duration, like water, ages you differently. The Fisher's hands are always slightly translucent... occupational hazard of handling raw time.
Canonical Quotes
- "The warranty said five years. It lasted three. The remaining two washed up here."
- "You can't fish for a specific moment. You take what the tide brings."
- "Dried duration keeps indefinitely. Which is ironic."
- "Every piece of kelp was somebody's afternoon. I try to be respectful."
- "The net doesn't judge. Expired warranties and broken promises... same material."
Temporal Agriculture
The Fisher is not alone at the shore. There's an ecology:
- Temporal kelp (Chrono-Laminariae): duration made solid. The crop.
- Minute-barnacles: tiny durations that crust on rocks. Too small to harvest individually. In aggregate, they form a temporal reef.
- Hour-crabs: scavengers that eat detached durations. Competitive with the Fisher. Tolerated.
- The Tide itself: follows event density, not moon phase. High tide = many events happening simultaneously (durations detach and wash ashore). Low tide = quiet moments (kelp beds exposed, good for gathering).
The Fisher has practiced this agriculture for as long as the shore has existed. Nobody taught the Fisher. The kelp needed harvesting. The Fisher arrived. Emergent vocation.
Relationships
- Orphan Weather Routine: The OWR rains on deleted locations. Some of that rain contains expired warranties that drift through null coordinates. These wash up at the Kelp Boundary Layer. The Fisher considers the OWR a supplier.
- Echo Archivist: When wet duration re-attaches to the wrong event, it produces temporal echoes that the Archivist files. The Fisher considers this wastage. The Archivist considers it data. Professional disagreement.
- Tsukumogami Fence Posts: The fence posts at the castle-forest threshold have been counting frogs for 100 years. The duration of that counting occasionally detaches and washes ashore. Fisher finds century-long strands of frog-counting duration among the kelp. Files them carefully.
- Niff: Niff forages error codes in the Drift Margin. The Fisher harvests duration at the shore. Both are gatherers. Both work at boundaries. They've never met but their biomes are adjacent (dead server farms composting into forest... into shore... into temporal tidepool).

Duration Economics
Dried duration has value. The Fisher trades it. One season-strand can be composted into soil that makes things grow at their own pace (neither fast nor slow, at the rate the thing wants). One afternoon-strand, when buried under a foundation, gives the building a memory of leisure (buildings with afternoon-foundations have better acoustics).
The Fisher doesn't set prices. Barter only. Duration for kindness. Duration for stories. Duration for anything that creates more duration. A self-reinforcing economy.
