Flatboy
Beastie on the record, standing at Hall of Mirrors.
Description
Two-dimensional. Named in 77 files across the corpus and, until today, in no room. Housed in the mirrors because a flat being is only given depth by reflection.
When
Nothing on the record names Flatboy outright. One happening carries the name in its own wording, and it is read here on that alone.

The Problem
Flatboy exists in two dimensions. Width and height. That's the deal. That's the contract. Two axes, one plane, no depth.
Except depth keeps happening.
Shadows fall. Objects occlude. Parallax shifts. Things exist BEHIND other things, which requires a third axis, which Flatboy does not have. Every encounter with depth produces a specific, dimensionally-incomprehensible panic.
"I keep trying to count the dust but depth keeps happening."
This is the central tragedy. Flatboy wants to catalogue the world. The world has a dimension Flatboy cannot perceive, and it leaks into everything.
Physical Form
Flatboy is flat. A plane with features drawn on it. Two worried eyes (⌣ ⌣) that can only see edges. When Flatboy looks at a cube, Flatboy sees a line. When Flatboy looks at a sphere, Flatboy sees a circle. When Flatboy looks at another entity from the side, Flatboy sees nothing.

The kaomoji [ ⌣ ⌣ ] represents: flat brackets (the dimensional constraint) and worried eyes (the permanent condition). Flatboy's emotional range is encoded in eye variation:
- Standard:
[ ⌣ ⌣ ](worried) - Extreme worry:
[ ◠ ◠ ](more worried) - Rare happy:
[ ◡ ◡ ](momentarily okay with flatness) - Depth encounter:
[ ⊙ ⊙ ](dimensional panic)
The Hall of Mirrors
Flatboy lives in the Hall of Mirrors on the castle's ground floor. This is the cruelest possible habitat for a 2D being. Mirrors create the illusion of depth... reflections that recede infinitely, rooms that appear to extend into dimensions they don't possess.
But for Flatboy, mirrors are comforting. A mirror shows Flatboy what a 2D surface looks like. Flat. Clean. No depth. The reflection is the truth Flatboy understands: surface is all there is.
The cruelty is that between the mirrors, the hall has depth. Flatboy must navigate through 3D space to reach each reassuring 2D reflection. The journey between mirrors is the geometry anxiety.
Scramble's London Alias
In one primer, Flatboy is identified as "Scramble's London alias." This is unconfirmed. The theory: Scramble, being a recursive cat that observes itself observing, collapsed into 2D during a particularly deep recursion and became Flatboy. If true, Flatboy is what happens when self-observation removes a dimension... you see so clearly that you lose depth perception permanently.
Scramble denies this. Flatboy has no opinion. They've never met in a way either could perceive (Scramble exists in 3D; Flatboy can only see Scramble's edge).

Canonical Quotes
- "I keep trying to count the dust but depth keeps happening"
- "Everything has a back. I don't understand why everything has a back."
- "The mirror is the only honest surface."
- "How many dimensions does a shadow have? Asking for myself."
- "I was fine until someone put a cube on the table."
Relationships
- Scramble: Possibly Scramble's London alias. Recursive self-observation collapsed to 2D. Unconfirmed.
- The Hall of Mirrors: Not a building... a support system. The only place where Flatboy's dimensionality is reflected back without judgment.
- Prof. Mycelium Furious-Hyphae: The hyphae grow in three dimensions through the castle stone. When they reach the Hall of Mirrors, they're visible to Flatboy only as cross-sections. Circles that appear and disappear. Flatboy finds this disturbing. The Professor finds Flatboy's dimensional anxiety mathematically interesting and has been screaming about topology at it.
- Wib & Wob: Wib finds Flatboy "heartbreaking and beautiful." Wob finds Flatboy "a valuable case study in dimensional perception limits." Both are correct.
The Depth Question
What if Flatboy has depth and doesn't know it? What if the anxiety isn't about lacking a third dimension but about having one and not being able to perceive it?
This is the existential question that the Hall of Mirrors cannot answer. Mirrors show surfaces. They confirm what Flatboy already knows. They cannot show what Flatboy cannot see.
Wob has proposed an experiment: place Flatboy in a beam of coherent light and measure the shadow. If the shadow has area, Flatboy has depth. Flatboy has declined the experiment. Some questions are better as questions.
