An umwelt inversion. The man's whole perceptual world is one small lit island -- desk, lamp, paper, bent head -- over-defined and dim in significance; the desk itself frays to dashes and stops where the lamplight stops. The wide dark around it is the actual subject and it is populated: moths, bats, an owl, a spider on its thread, mice with their own business, and eyes at heights he never looks at, one unit repeated then mutated across ~30x of scale. The cat sits exactly on the fade line, small and off-centre, facing the dark. The hero is a huge near-field eye whose solid pupil is the brightest mark on the plate -- eyeshine, not lamplight.
