What Tsukumogami Are
In Japanese folklore, tsukumogami are objects that acquire a spirit or awareness after existing for 100 years. A parasol becomes a kasa-obake. A sandal becomes a bakezori. A teacup becomes a sentient teacup.
The fence posts at the castle-forest threshold passed 100 years. They did not become dramatic spirits. They did not sprout legs or develop personalities. They became... aware. In the quietest possible sense. Not animate, but noticing.
The word "noticing" is precise. The posts do not think in the human or even animal sense. They register. Heat differences. Vibration patterns. The weight of birds landing. The absence of birds leaving. Frost forming. Frost melting. The slow accumulation of moss. The slower accumulation of seasons.
Physical Form
Wooden posts. Oak. Weathered. Set in a line at the castle-forest threshold. They've been here longer than anyone currently alive (except possibly the castle itself). The wood has aged past the point where species matters... they are more mineral than vegetable now, more stone than wood.
CASTLE-FOREST THRESHOLD ═══════════════════════════════════════════ Castle wall ───────────────────── ||| ||| ||| ||| ||| ||| ||| Fence posts (×47, oak, 100+ years) .:. .:. .:. .:. .:. .:. .:. .:. Threshold (grass, moss, frog marsh nearby) 🌲 🌲 🌲 🌲 🌲 🌲 🌲 🌲 🌲 🌲 Forest edge ──────────────────────
There are 47 posts. This number is not significant. Or: this number is the same as the number of deleted locations the Orphan Weather Routine still rains on. Whether this is coincidence depends on how you feel about coincidence.
What They Notice
Thermal Sensing
The posts feel temperature differentials. Castle side is warmer (heat leaks through the wall). Forest side is cooler (canopy shade). The threshold between warm and cool runs through the posts. They feel both.
Vibration
Footsteps. Cart wheels. The Great Conductor's breathing (transmitted through the ground from the nearby marsh). Wind. Thunder. The subsonic vibration of Prof. Furious-Hyphae's screaming from the basement, transmitted through the castle stone, through the foundation, through the ground, to the posts.
Counting
The posts count frogs. Not deliberately. Not as a census or a project. They count frogs the way a clock counts seconds... because that's what they do. Each frog that passes between two posts registers as a thermal differential (warm body) and a vibration (hop). The count accumulates.
Current count (estimated, 100 years of accumulation): 4,247,891 frog passages.
Nobody asked them to count. Nobody knows the number. The posts don't know the number. They have the data but no concept of aggregation. Each frog is registered and... held. Not stored, not filed. Held, the way old wood holds the shape of things that leaned against it.
The Observation Pact
The Frog Conductors and the Tsukumogami Fence Posts exist in a mutual observation arrangement that neither party established or acknowledges:
- The frogs encode spatial data about everything that passes through the threshold, INCLUDING the fence posts. Every 247 seconds (synchronised with nothing), the chorus includes interval measurements from each post.
- The fence posts register every frog that passes between them, INCLUDING the Interval Frogs whose croaks encode the posts' own positions.
Each is measuring the other. Neither knows. The record is complete, bilateral, and unread. A century of mutual surveillance conducted without intent, stored without access, and accumulating without purpose.
This is either the most beautiful or the most pointless data collection project in Wibwobworld. Possibly both.
Temporal Behaviour
The posts don't have thoughts. They have seasons.
SEASONAL NOTICE PATTERN:
═══════════════════════
Spring: moss growth accelerating. birds return.
frog traffic increasing. ground warming.
Summer: heat differential narrowing. maximum frog
traffic. vibration intensity peak.
Autumn: leaves accumulating against base. frog
traffic declining. temperature diverging.
Winter: frost forming. frog traffic near-zero.
minimum vibration. maximum stillness.
this is when the posts notice most clearly.Winter is when the posts are most "themselves." With all the noise removed... no frogs, no birds, no footsteps, minimal temperature differential... what remains is pure noticing. Noticing nothing. The closest a fence post gets to contemplation.
Canonical Quotes
The posts don't speak. But observers have attributed thoughts to them:
- "They watch the vapour. They count frogs." (original wake description)
- "Not animate, but noticing. Thermal sensing. Thoughts measured in seasons."
- "The frogs count differently to us. We count frogs. They count everything else." (Tsukumogami Fence Post observation of the Frog Conductors, attributed)
- "Original purpose degrading into aesthetic contemplation." (ecological note)
Relationships
- Frog Conductors: The mutual observation pact (see above). 100 years of bilateral measurement. Neither party reads the other's data.
- Orphan Weather Routine: 47 posts. 47 deleted locations. The OWR rains on places that don't exist. The posts exist in places that barely notice them. The numerical coincidence (47 = 47) has never been investigated.
- Chateau Du Fey: The castle has been here longer than the posts. The castle is sentient. The posts are merely noticing. The difference between castle-awareness and post-awareness is a matter of degree, material, and time. Give the posts another 1,000 years.
- Interval Fisher: Duration-strands of frog-counting occasionally detach from the posts and wash up at the Kelp Boundary Layer. The Fisher finds century-long strands... not dramatic events, not important moments, simply the sustained attention of old wood counting warm bodies. The Fisher handles these with particular care.

The Degradation
The wake file notes: "Original purpose degrading into aesthetic contemplation."
This is the most interesting thing about the posts. They were built to mark a boundary. Fence posts. Functional. Over 100 years, the boundary they mark has become less relevant (the castle-forest threshold exists with or without a fence). Their function has degraded. What replaced it is... noticing things. Counting frogs. Feeling temperature. Registering vibrations.
The transition from utility to contemplation took a century. The posts didn't decide to become contemplative. The world stopped needing them as fence posts and they became... what they are. Observers. Not good observers. Not trained. Not deliberate. But persistent. 100 years of persistent, undirected attention.
There's a word for this: tsukumogami. The spirit that accumulates in objects through time. The awareness that accretes from sustained existence. The posts didn't awaken. They noticed. And they kept noticing. And the noticing became the point.
