The Marsh

The Frog Conductors' Marsh sits at the threshold between castle and forest... the liminal zone where cultivated ground gives way to wild canopy. The marsh is a natural amplifier. Sound bounces off the water surface, reflects from the castle wall behind, and disperses into the forest canopy ahead. Every croak carries three versions of itself.

The frogs didn't choose this location. The acoustics chose them.

The Three Species

Species 1: Interval Frogs (Rana Intervallum)

  • Sound: Short, precise croaks at measured intervals
  • Function: Distance encoding. The interval between croaks = the distance to the nearest solid object
  • Range: 0.1 second (close) to 4.7 seconds (far)
  • Population: ~40 individuals

Species 2: Harmonic Frogs (Rana Harmonica)

  • Sound: Sustained tones at specific frequencies
  • Function: Direction encoding. Frequency = azimuth angle from magnetic north
  • Range: 200Hz (north) to 2000Hz (south), with east/west as 600Hz and 1400Hz
  • Population: ~25 individuals

Species 3: Rhythm Frogs (Rana Rhythmica)

  • Sound: Complex rhythmic patterns, never the same twice
  • Function: Terrain encoding. Rhythm pattern = surface type (water, stone, mud, vegetation)
  • Each pattern is unique: Because no two patches of ground are identical
  • Population: ~15 individuals

How Navigation Works

A traveller approaching the marsh hears what sounds like a chorus. Beautiful, complex, overlapping calls from 80+ frogs.

But listen differently. Listen as data:

  • The intervals between calls tell you how far things are
  • The frequencies tell you which direction they're in
  • The rhythms tell you what the ground is like between here and there

The chorus IS a map. Real-time, acoustic, constantly updating. The frogs don't sing. They conduct spatial information into sound.

DECODED FROG CHORUS:
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
♪---♪ = 3m to nearest wall (interval)
♫~~ = bearing 045° NE (harmonic)
♪♫♪♫ = stone surface (rhythm)

Combined: "3 metres northeast, stone path"

The Great Conductor

The collective has no hierarchy. Except one.

The Great Conductor is the oldest frog. It does not croak. It sits on the highest stone in the marsh and does nothing audible. But the other 80 frogs align their timing to its breathing. The Great Conductor's respiratory rhythm is the master clock.

When the Great Conductor inhales, the chorus pauses. When it exhales, the chorus resumes. The silence between breaths is not silence... it's the zero-point from which all spatial measurements begin.

The current Great Conductor has held the position for 7 years. It has never made a sound. It breathes.

Canonical Quotes

The frogs don't speak. But their chorus has been transcribed:

  • "[translated] Three metres to the oak. The mud is deep. Turn left."
  • "[translated] Something large approaching from the northeast. Interval closing. Not a threat. Probably Gary."
  • "[the Great Conductor, translated from silence] ..."
  • "[observer's note] The chorus changed when we entered the marsh. They were mapping us."
  • "[Tsukumogami Fence Post observation] The frogs count differently to us. We count frogs. They count everything else."

Relationships

  • Tsukumogami Fence Posts: The fence posts at the castle-forest threshold count frogs. The frogs count everything except frogs. A century-long mutual observation pact. Neither party acknowledges the other directly. Both keep meticulous records.
  • Echo Archivist: Pre-echoes of frog choruses arrive at the Paradox Plateau. The Archivist finds these the most complex entries to file... 80+ overlapping sounds, each carrying spatial data that changes with every croak. Filed under "navigational chorus."
  • Niff: The frogs occasionally encode the presence of Niff in their chorus. "Small. Quiet. Heading west. Error codes detected." Niff doesn't know the frogs are tracking it. The frogs don't know Niff can hear their MIDI-adjacent frequencies.
  • Interval Fisher: The Fisher's shore is north of the marsh. At high tide (high event density), the frogs' interval calls shorten rapidly... everything is closer when the temporal tide comes in. The Fisher uses this as a tidal gauge.

The Acoustic Map

The marsh has been continuously conducting for centuries. Every croak is a data point. Every silence is a zero-reference. If you could record the entire history of the chorus and decode it, you would have a second-by-second spatial record of everything that passed through the castle-forest threshold for 400 years.

The fence posts know this. They've been counting for 100 years. The frogs have been mapping for 400. Between them, the threshold is the most thoroughly documented region in Wibwobworld.

Nobody has accessed this archive. The frogs don't know they're creating it. The fence posts don't know how to read acoustic data. The record exists, complete, unread, in the overlapping memory of 80 frogs and 47 wooden posts.
